Install MatchCut FCP on your Mac

3 min read

This guide describes how to install the MatchCut FCP beta on a Mac. It also describes how to open the app for the first time. The procedure takes a few minutes.

Check the requirements

Make sure that your Mac meets these requirements:

  • macOS 12 Monterey or later
  • An Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or later). Intel support is not verified.
  • Final Cut Pro 10.5 or later. You need this application to open the sequences that the app exports.
  • An internet connection for the first transcription. The speech model downloads once and is stored on your Mac.

For the complete list, see the system requirements page.

1. Download the DMG file

Download the latest beta build from one of these sources:

The DMG file is a disk image. Its name is MatchCut-FCP-0.0.1.dmg. The version number changes with each release.

2. Copy the app to Applications

  1. Double-click the DMG file. A Finder window opens.
  2. In the Finder window, drag MatchCut FCP onto the Applications shortcut.
  3. When the copy is complete, eject the disk image.

3. Open the app for the first time

The beta is not yet notarized by Apple. macOS can block the first launch. It can show this message: "Apple could not verify 'MatchCut FCP' is free of malware." This message is expected. You must complete one of the following options one time only.

Option A: Open the app from the right-click menu (recommended)

  1. Open the Applications folder.
  2. Right-click MatchCut FCP. If you do not have a right mouse button, Control-click the app. Select Open.
  3. In the dialog box, select Open again.

The DMG file also contains a file named How to Open.txt. This file contains the same steps.

Option B: Remove the quarantine flag in Terminal

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Run this command:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/MatchCut FCP.app"

After you run this command, double-click the app to open it.

4. Download the speech model

The first time you generate subtitles, MatchCut FCP downloads a speech model. The default model is base. It is about 145 MB.

The app downloads the model from Hugging Face. It stores the model in ~/Library/Application Support/MatchCut FCP/Models/. The app shows the download progress. The app downloads the model one time only. After that, transcription works offline.

If you already have a local .bin model file, point the app to that file. You do not need to download the model.

Troubleshooting

"MatchCut FCP is damaged and can't be opened." Gatekeeper can block an app that is not notarized and that you moved directly from the DMG file. Use Option A or Option B in section 3.

The app opens, but step 1 cannot decode my file. Step 1 accepts these audio formats directly: wav, flac, mp3, and ogg. Step 1 decodes these formats through macOS: m4a, aac, mp4 and mov (audio tracks), aifc, alac, and other containers.

If the file has no audio track, or macOS cannot decode its codec, the app shows a message that explains the problem.

Transcription does not start. The first run needs an internet connection to download the model. Check your connection. You can also supply a local model file.
